Description

Making this homemade blueberry sauce is as simple as stirring and simmering, but the results taste like you’ve spent hours in the kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine the base ingredients in a medium saucepan: combine the blueberries, granulated sugar, 1/2 cup of water, and lemon juice. Stir everything together over medium heat. As the mixture warms, the blueberries will begin to burst, releasing their vibrant juices and turning the sauce a deep purple-blue hue.
  2. Let it simmer the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 6–8 minutes. Stir occasionally and enjoy the sweet aroma that fills your kitchen—it’s like summer in the air.
  3. Thicken the sauce: in a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and 1 tablespoon of cold water until smooth. Slowly pour this slurry into the simmering berry mixture while stirring constantly. Continue cooking for another 2–3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency.
  4. Finish with vanilla: remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the sauce cool slightly before serving, or transfer it to a glass jar to cool completely before storing.
