Description

A comforting casserole featuring layers of beef, creamy noodles, and melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 8 oz wide egg noodles
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/4 cups cottage cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Cooking spray or butter (for greasing the dish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish and set it aside.
  2. Brown the Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until it’s no longer pink. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until soft and fragrant—about 5 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Add the Sauce: Stir in the tomato sauce, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes so the flavors can deepen. This step fills your kitchen with the warm, savory aroma that signals comfort is on its way.
  4. Boil the Noodles: While the beef simmers, cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  5. Mix the Creamy Layer: In a large bowl, combine sour cream, cottage cheese, and chopped green onions. Fold in the cooked noodles until they’re well-coated in the creamy mixture.
  6. Assemble the Casserole: Spoon half of the creamy noodle mixture into your prepared baking dish. Top with half of the beef mixture, then sprinkle with a layer of shredded cheddar. Repeat the layers one more time—noodles, beef, then the rest of the cheese.
  7. Bake to Perfection: Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. The edges should be golden and crisp, just the way we love it.
  8. Rest and Serve: Let it sit for 5 minutes before serving. It gives the layers time to settle and makes it easier to scoop out a perfect portion.
